Monte Isola
The car-free island in the middle of the lake
Monte Isola is the big green island in the middle of the lake, one of the largest inhabited lake islands in Europe. There are no private cars here: you get around on foot, by bike or on the minibus linking the villages.
What to see
- Peschiera Maraglio: the fishing village where boats from Sulzano dock, with nets drying and traditional boats.
- Sanctuary of the Madonna della Ceriola: at the top of the island, with views over the whole lake.
- Carzano and Siviano: waterside villages linked by paths through olive and chestnut trees.
- Rocca Martinengo: the medieval tower above the northern part of the island.
Good to know
The most frequent ferries leave from Sulzano and Sale Marasino. A bike ride around the island is about nine kilometres. Read our guide to getting there and visiting.
